DF3: Lesson 4 Policy Lab
Can poor policy decisions open the door to a cyberattack?
In this KS3 / lower secondary computing lesson students take on the role of cyber policy writers, responding to a realistic breach at a fictional start-up. Using the structure Breach → Rule → Justification, they identify failures and write targeted clauses to fix them. Each student drafts and peer reviews policies with a focus on technical soundness and risk reduction. A structured extension challenges them to strengthen a rule using layered defence, combining technical controls with user training or alerts.
Through this, students uncover:
• How access control rules like unique logins and role-based permissions improve accountability
• Why audit logs must be checked and alert-triggered to detect threats quickly
• How a fast and clear incident response plan limits harm and supports legal compliance
• What makes a strong cyber policy: clarity, technical accuracy, and problem alignment
• How layered defences (e.g. MFA + training) work together to block advanced threats
