This KS3 / lower secondary computing lesson explores the ethical challenges of artificial intelligence by asking a powerful question: Can computers be fair?
Students begin by investigating a real-world problem where facial recognition systems misidentify certain groups. Through clear teacher-led input, they learn how AI bias emerges from flawed training data - and why this matters.
They then take on two challenges: spotting bias in real AI case studies, and running a simulation where they test how an AI makes unfair decisions based on age, favourite colour, and hobbies. The lesson concludes with a critical thinking task on whether AI can ever truly be unbiased.
